It's all too obvious now, the record was always broken
you played it anyway, the lines not sung but spoken
you heard me humming softly, trying to match your tune
but I guess you wanted more, I tried too hard too soon
I knew the words, but didn't know the song
I can still hear it playing, loud and clear and true
it was your song you were playing, for no one else but you
I wish for love I sang to you, my eye a single tear
you kept your song playing, so loud you couldn't hear
I knew the words, but couldn't sing along
I thought you might have meant it, I knew my heart was wrong
it's more than notes on paper, it's melody that makes the song
you never really listened, no matter what I'd play
you took my love from me, and keep it to this day
I knew the words, but always got it wrong
