Life

back into the sea it blows, rolling into thunder,
crashing into pain, the wind carries the cries.

the smell is acrid with death and decay,
no time has passed, but for centuries the moment is frozen.

the heaving seas pull you deep under,
the water pulses as a giant pump,
pushing and pulling you deeper into its depths.

you gasp for air and fill your lungs with the cold liquid death,
it takes you, your mind swirls, light fades,
you see things from times past,
you feel as night has taken you into its bossom.

your eyes glaze over and the salt fills your hair,
you have lost all notice of time, you see yourself falling,
you reach out for hands that are not there,
you grasp at straws that cannot support you,
mom ? is that you ? I smell her apron and the dinner
she has made splashed over it,
the goldfish I won at the school carnival,
we are saying goodbye to grandpa.

my mind wanders, starves for oxygen, then darkness,
not the kind that you can see through,
the kind that hurts, the kind that instills panic and fear,
you scream with lungs that have no air,
you fall silent, you fall silent, you fall . . . .. silence
